In BC’s community service sector—where staff support vulnerable individuals and families in high-stress, emotionally charged environments—conflict is inevitable. Whether it’s tension within your team, disagreements with colleagues, or difficult interactions with clients, how supervisors respond can make all the difference in the world.

This hands-on workshop is designed specifically for supervisors working in youth and family support, counselling, housing, and other community-based services. It equips leaders with the tools to address conflict constructively and maintain trust, safety, and respect across all relationships. During the program, participants will:

– Reframe conflict as an opportunity for growth, clarity, and connection;
– Learn key elements of effective communication during challenging moments;
– Explore their personal “response-ability” and how to stay grounded under pressure;
– Practice tailored strategies for navigating different types of difficult situations;
– Understand the role of trust, psychological safety, and “breakthrough” communication in resolving issues;
– Engage in courageous conversations with greater confidence and care; and
– Apply practical tools through real-world scenarios and role-playing exercises.

Rooted in the realities of BC’s social service landscape, this workshop offers meaningful, hands-on learning for supervisors who are ready to lead conflict resolution with skill, empathy, and purpose.

Douglas College - Training Group

Training Group is a Douglas College department that provides a wide variety of training and development options for individuals and organizations. We support supervisors and teams in BC’s community service sector to grow, lead, and thrive. Our expertise lies in the “people side” of organizational development—this includes complex areas like communication, collaboration, service delivery, change management, workplace culture, relationship-building, and staff engagement. These human-centered challenges are at the heart of community-based work, and our training helps organizations strengthen the skills that matter most for sustainable impact.

All of our sessions use a “Learning by Doing” approach, where participants actively engage with their peers through real-time, hands-on exercises. These may include role-playing, scenario-based problem-solving, group presentations, and other interactive activities designed to reflect the realities of working in nonprofit and community settings.

Training is flexible and can be delivered on-site at your organization, at any Douglas College campus, at another convenient location in your community and even virtually for convenience.
