Performance Management for Community Service Organizations – (7 Hours)

Training Date: Company Cohort-based: By Request; Next Public Virtual Workshop: Oct 30th & Nov 6th, 2025

Delivery Format: Online-Live, In-Person, Cohort, In-Community

Training Swap: Yes

Supervising staff in community service organizations comes with a unique set of challenges—limited budgets, staffing shortages, and scarce resources can make effective performance management feel out of reach. Yet, building a strong, mission-driven team starts with setting clear expectations, coaching for success, and addressing performance issues proactively and fairly. We also have to effectively identify and reinforce excellent performance when it happens too!

This full-day workshop focuses on equipping supervisors in the non-profit and community service sectors with practical tools to manage performance despite constraints. Rather than viewing performance management as a punitive or administrative task, this course reframes it as an ongoing, collaborative process that supports employee growth, strengthens accountability, and advances organizational goals. During the workshop, participants will:

– Learn how to manage staff performance when resources—like time, funding, and staff—are limited;
– Explore practical, low-cost strategies for coaching, goal setting, and performance review;
– Understand how to assess and support staff who may face role overload or burnout;
– Gain skills for providing constructive, strengths-based feedback;
– Apply Motivation Theory and Goal Alignment to mission-driven work;
– Identify root causes of performance challenges and how to address them constructively;
– Learn to navigate performance discipline in a fair, consistent, and legally sound manner;
– Explore a Situational Leadership model that helps guide direction and support levels; and
– Discover how to foster a culture of open communication, accountability, and respect—even in high-stress environments.

By the end of the workshop, supervisors will have a toolkit to support staff development, improve performance outcomes, and lead with empathy and clarity—even under pressure.

Douglas College - Training Group

Training Group is a Douglas College department that provides a wide variety of training and development options for individuals and organizations. We support supervisors and teams in BC’s community service sector to grow, lead, and thrive. Our expertise lies in the “people side” of organizational development—this includes complex areas like communication, collaboration, service delivery, change management, workplace culture, relationship-building, and staff engagement. These human-centered challenges are at the heart of community-based work, and our training helps organizations strengthen the skills that matter most for sustainable impact.

All of our sessions use a “Learning by Doing” approach, where participants actively engage with their peers through real-time, hands-on exercises. These may include role-playing, scenario-based problem-solving, group presentations, and other interactive activities designed to reflect the realities of working in nonprofit and community settings.

Training is flexible and can be delivered on-site at your organization, at any Douglas College campus, at another convenient location in your community and even virtually for convenience.
