Delivery Format: Online-Live, In-Person, Cohort, In-Community

Stepping into a supervisory role in the community services and non-profit sector is both exciting and demanding. For new Supervisors—especially those promoted from within—managing former peers, navigating strained resources, and supporting frontline staff working under pressure can feel overwhelming without the right tools.

This practical, 3-hour workshop is designed specifically for new or emerging Supervisors in BC’s social services and non-profit organizations. It addresses the universal challenges of transitioning into leadership, while also acknowledging the unique demands of leading teams that are often overextended, under-resourced, and balancing complex contracts or projects. Participants will gain foundational supervisory skills to help them:

– Navigate the shift from peer to leader with professionalism and confidence;
– Build trust and credibility in environments where emotions and burnout may be high;
– Apply practical strategies to plan, delegate, coach, and communicate effectively;
– Address resistance and negativity without losing connection to the team;
– Prioritize tasks using a simple, action-oriented model; and
– Support productivity and morale even when resources are limited.

Douglas College - Training Group

Training Group is a Douglas College department that provides a wide variety of training and development options for individuals and organizations. We support supervisors and teams in BC’s community service sector to grow, lead, and thrive. Our expertise lies in the “people side” of organizational development—this includes complex areas like communication, collaboration, service delivery, change management, workplace culture, relationship-building, and staff engagement. These human-centered challenges are at the heart of community-based work, and our training helps organizations strengthen the skills that matter most for sustainable impact.

All of our sessions use a “Learning by Doing” approach, where participants actively engage with their peers through real-time, hands-on exercises. These may include role-playing, scenario-based problem-solving, group presentations, and other interactive activities designed to reflect the realities of working in nonprofit and community settings.

Training is flexible and can be delivered on-site at your organization, at any Douglas College campus, at another convenient location in your community and even virtually for convenience.
