Supervisors in community service and non-profit organizations are constantly making decisions—some in the moment, such as managing crises, resolving conflicts, or reallocating limited resources; others over time, like planning programs, writing funding proposals, or addressing staffing needs. Regardless of the timeline, each decision can have a deep impact on clients, staff, and the sustainability of services.

This 4-hour workshop is designed to support supervisors who are navigating these high-stakes choices in complex, fast-paced environments. Through real-world examples and practical tools, participants will strengthen their ability to think critically, make sound decisions, and foster creative problem-solving within their teams. During this workshop, participants will:

– Explore critical thinking strategies to assess challenges, options, and outcomes more clearly;
– Use structured frameworks to support sound decision-making in both urgent and strategic situations;
– Apply tools to encourage collaborative, solution-focused thinking with their teams;
– Learn how to coach staff to bring forward ideas—not just problems;
– Improve their ability to communicate and support recommendations with clarity and confidence; and
– Promote a culture of innovation, accountability, and adaptive thinking.

Grounded in the realities of BC’s social services and non-profit sector, this session helps supervisors lead with clarity, creativity, and purpose—even under pressure.

Douglas College - Training Group

Training Group is a Douglas College department that provides a wide variety of training and development options for individuals and organizations. We support supervisors and teams in BC’s community service sector to grow, lead, and thrive. Our expertise lies in the “people side” of organizational development—this includes complex areas like communication, collaboration, service delivery, change management, workplace culture, relationship-building, and staff engagement. These human-centered challenges are at the heart of community-based work, and our training helps organizations strengthen the skills that matter most for sustainable impact.

All of our sessions use a “Learning by Doing” approach, where participants actively engage with their peers through real-time, hands-on exercises. These may include role-playing, scenario-based problem-solving, group presentations, and other interactive activities designed to reflect the realities of working in nonprofit and community settings.

Training is flexible and can be delivered on-site at your organization, at any Douglas College campus, at another convenient location in your community and even virtually for convenience.
