In BC’s community service and non-profit sector, supervisors are on the frontlines of complex, emotionally demanding work. Whether leading teams that support individuals facing poverty, trauma, addiction, or other vulnerabilities, you’re constantly navigating high-stakes situations with limited resources. This ongoing pressure doesn’t just stay at work — it can follow you home, impacting your personal life, relationships, and overall well-being.

Mindshift: Working Better with Stress is a highly practical workshop designed for supervisors who are trying to balance their leadership responsibilities with their own emotional and mental health. This session will help you better understand your relationship with stress and develop new tools to navigate it — not by pretending stress doesn’t exist, but by learning how to work with it in healthier, more sustainable ways.

In this workshop, we’ll explore:
– How stress actually works: understanding the stress response and what’s within your control;
– Tools to improve your “response-ability” in high-pressure or emotionally charged situations;
– Differentiating between productive (“good”) stress and harmful (“bad”) stress;
– Practical strategies to build resilience and recover from difficult days or weeks;
– Ways to foster a mindset of accountability — without blame or burnout; and
– How to adopt a Growth Mindset to help yourself and your team navigate change and challenge.

This workshop offers both insight and action, helping supervisors protect their own well-being while continuing to lead with compassion and clarity in the work that matters most.

Douglas College - Training Group

Training Group is a Douglas College department that provides a wide variety of training and development options for individuals and organizations. We support supervisors and teams in BC’s community service sector to grow, lead, and thrive. Our expertise lies in the “people side” of organizational development—this includes complex areas like communication, collaboration, service delivery, change management, workplace culture, relationship-building, and staff engagement. These human-centered challenges are at the heart of community-based work, and our training helps organizations strengthen the skills that matter most for sustainable impact.

All of our sessions use a “Learning by Doing” approach, where participants actively engage with their peers through real-time, hands-on exercises. These may include role-playing, scenario-based problem-solving, group presentations, and other interactive activities designed to reflect the realities of working in nonprofit and community settings.

Training is flexible and can be delivered on-site at your organization, at any Douglas College campus, at another convenient location in your community and even virtually for convenience.
