Speak with Impact: Public Speaking for Social Sector Leaders (4 hours)

Training Date: By Request

Delivery Format: Online-Live, In-Person, Cohort, In-Community

Training Swap: Yes

Leaders in BC’s non-profit and community service sectors are often called upon to speak — whether at community events, funding presentations, conferences, media interviews, team meetings, or internal trainings. But public speaking in this context isn’t just about confidence — it’s about connecting with people, communicating with clarity, and representing your organization’s mission with authenticity and purpose.

Speak with Impact is a practical, skills-focused workshop designed specifically for supervisors and leaders in community-serving organizations. Whether you’re sharing your organization’s story, training your staff, advocating for funding, or responding to crisis in the media, this session will help you sharpen your message and deliver it with credibility and confidence.

In this workshop, we’ll explore:
– The fundamentals of clear, confident, and compelling public speaking;
– How to adapt your message to different audiences and speaking contexts (e.g., media, funders, clients, staff);
– Strategies for calming nerves and managing anxiety;
– How to structure a powerful message — from storytelling to calls-to-action;
– Vocal presence, body language, and non-verbal communication; and
– How to speak with purpose while staying aligned with your organization’s values and mission.

This session is highly interactive and supportive, providing real-world practice and feedback in a safe and encouraging environment. You’ll leave with tools and techniques you can apply right away — whether you’re at a podium, in front of a camera, or leading your next team meeting.

Douglas College - Training Group

Training Group is a Douglas College department that provides a wide variety of training and development options for individuals and organizations. We support supervisors and teams in BC’s community service sector to grow, lead, and thrive. Our expertise lies in the “people side” of organizational development—this includes complex areas like communication, collaboration, service delivery, change management, workplace culture, relationship-building, and staff engagement. These human-centered challenges are at the heart of community-based work, and our training helps organizations strengthen the skills that matter most for sustainable impact.

All of our sessions use a “Learning by Doing” approach, where participants actively engage with their peers through real-time, hands-on exercises. These may include role-playing, scenario-based problem-solving, group presentations, and other interactive activities designed to reflect the realities of working in nonprofit and community settings.

Training is flexible and can be delivered on-site at your organization, at any Douglas College campus, at another convenient location in your community and even virtually for convenience.
